So I just got back from this, which I went to because it was right down the road and, come on, how often do you get a chance to go watch a joust?

At some point in the middle of it all, I was sitting on a hay bale in the shade (it was a hot day, and the sun was bright bright bright), eating a sausage and drinking a beer (and the beer may have had something to do with the quality of my musings as that point, just so you know...), keeping one eye on the archery competition as I watched people in period garb and kids with plastic swords and helmets stream by, overhearing people's ordinary conversations sprinkled with "milords" and "huzzahs," and I couldn't help feeling that the world is absolutely perfect, even as shitty as it is.

(The huzzahs totally made me think of Hob Gadling, though.)

Shortly after I arrived there was a little mounted armored combat demonstration, with guys on horseback whacking each other with rattan swords. Which turned out to be pretty much the funniest thing ever, don't ask me why, but I was standing next to another lady who was also filming and we both kept busting up, looking at each other with an "isn't this incredible?" expression, and going back to it. It's probably because the knights were just so earnest about it all. Then there's just this hollow rattling whack and... there is no and. It was awesome.

Then I found my way to the reenactors' weapons tent and gave a nice mace a few hearty swings, eyed the helmet with the dent and hole in it, and I listened as one of them told a group of kids about special arrows that had crescent-moon tips made for shooting at ships' rigging. Then I bought myself a t-shirt that says (in runic script) "if you can read this, you're too close to a Viking" because it made me lol. Then I found a couple of SCA ladies doing some sewing and I was simply compelled to watch someone else prick their finger a million times and grouse about hand sewing with them.

Oh, and the jousting was cool too. Their armor glinted in the sun quite amazingly.

But yeah. Hay bale. Beer. Huzzah. Awesome.

Color me green with envy!
By the way, is Six Days of Spooky on hiatus this year?

It was indeed enviable! Apparently it has become an annual event--maybe you should visit next year? :D

And oh, man, at least from my end it is. I haven't had time/mental energy to come up with anything... but I'd be thrilled if anyone else decided to keep up with it anyway, y'know?

Oh, wow, how cool is this!

I love to picture you sitting there in the shade, being at peace with our oh so non-perfect world for a while. :-)
