2 drabbles: "First Impression" and "Of the Wisdom of Wizards" (PG)

I was skimming through the books the other day for a project I'm working on, and a couple of lines struck me and gave me some inspiration. So... I'm back out of hiding. *grin*

ETA: Gosh, I forgot to say thanks to [livejournal.com profile] cressida0201 for the quick beta job! So... gracias!

First Impression

Rating: PG
Summary: A bit of what Boromir was thinking about at the Council of Elrond.

He listens as the history of his people is told by one who has lived since long before Gondor’s first days. He knows the tales, of course—he learned them at his father’s knee, well enough to recite each name in the lines of Kings and Stewards, to recall every battle fought to keep Gondor’s people safe. But to hear it told now, so far from home… his love for every inch of his land aches him terribly. When silence falls he cannot stop himself. He stands and speaks…

“Give me leave, Master Elrond, first to say more of Gondor.”

Of the Wisdom of Wizards

Summary: A bit of Boromir's thoughts on Wizards

Stories of Mithrandir’s wisdom were not uncommon in Gondor. The wizard was well-known, and although they had met only twice, Boromir had heard much more about him from Faramir. His brother’s fascination had not rubbed off on him, though; he had been more inclined to adopt their father’s distrust of the Grey Wanderer.

Now here they stood between wolves and wall, as he had feared. He was surprised to see the doors appear, glimmering faintly on the stone. But then, to learn this?

“But do not you know the words, Gandalf?”

He was surprised at the depth of his surprise.

his love for every inch of his land aches him terribly.
Oh, my poor dear. That was the root of it all for him, wasn't it?

Wonderfully, wonderfully written!

I tend to think it was... poor guy...

And thanks! I'm glad you liked it! ^__^

Now here they stood between wolves and wall, as he had feared.

Lovely line, and lovely fics both of them!

Thank you! Glad to hear you liked 'em! ^_^

Oh, both of these are so great!

I liked this line:
his love for every inch of his land aches him terribly

Of course it does. Poor Boromir...

And this was great too:
He was surprised at the depth of his surprise

He seemed so utterly shocked in those couple of lines in the book, I thought it was fitting. ^_~

Glad these worked for ya! And thanks!

Another vote for his love for every inch of his land aches him terribly as a lovely, lovely line. He must have felt so homesick and out of place.

Thanks! And yep, it must have been rough on him...

"But do not you know the words, Gandalf?"
He was surprised at the depth of his surprise.

That was great ending!

And you really hit the nail in the first drabble.

Great stuff!

Thanks! Glad you think so. ^_^

Yay, you posted 'em! You already know I like both of these, particularly the little ironic "sting" at the end of the second one.

Yep! (and thanks for kicking me in the butt to do so!) Heheh... I can totally see him going O__O at that revelation. Thanks for the fb!

Okay...so bad Lilan finally reviewes these...awesome, I love them both :)

The first one is just incredibly moving, and not only that line that so many loved. It's all of it, the way Boromir remembers all the lessons of his childhood, his desire to add some more to another's account, his inability to keep himself from speaking up... Things like this really reconcile me to Boromir, and I thank you for this drabble, because it's actually a lot more pleasant to think of him the way I do now, without the twinge of irritation I used to feel for him. It's a really powerful drabble.

And the other one is of course great too :)

Hey, reviews are good whenever they happen! ^_^

The first couple times I read that chapter I thought it was odd how he was sort of butting in... but then it occurred to me what thoughts might have been behind that. He's fun to figure out. ^_~

I'm happy to hear that you found this so heartening. Thanks for the fb!

Both of these are tremendous! There's not enough Boromir fic out there, alas. Thanks for the insights into this rather complex man.

Thank you! Boromir's one of my favorites, and getting into his head is something of a hobby for me, so I'm glad my take on his thoughts in these scenes worked for you too! ^__^
