Summary: Boromir and Faramir get some strange news from a strange source.
The old woman touched each brother’s hand in turn. Her fine clothes seemed out of place in the little seer’s shop in the market, and even more strange, her head was bald, and a band of gold cloth rested on her brow. They had wandered here, half-drunk, after an eve celebrating their safe return home. Her eyes misted with long sight, then her lips pursed into a thin line, and she spoke grudgingly but firmly.
“You will be Steward.” She said to Boromir. He snorted. This was hardly uncommon knowledge. She then turned to Faramir. “You will also be Steward.” Faramir began to laugh- surely she was jesting!- but her stern glance silenced him.
“My lady, we cannot both be Steward!” Boromir said, looking from the seer to his brother incredulously.
She tilted her head in acknowledgment and turned the force of her piercing eyes on them both. “One of you will be Steward… after the other is dead.”
The brothers left and walked, more soberly, back home. Boromir eyed Faramir warily, and was met with a nervous smile. After a moment, though, they both laughed. Seer indeed! There could be no truth to the old woman’s words, could there?
