Posting this in the superstitious hopes that posting today will mean much inspiration in 2007. I was going to expand it, but, ehh, I guess I can do that later if I want.

T.A. 2992

Faramir awoke in the dead of night, and immediately leapt out of bed in panic. His breaths came fast and hard as he hurried barefoot across the room to the window. It was too dark to see, and his heart pounded too loudly in his ears to hear anything. Out into the hall, through a maze of unfamiliar passages he walked quickly, just barely not running.

Once outside, the sea wind hit his senses. He stood there, still as stone, staring into the night. The moist salt air wove around him, and he felt out of place, and terribly small.

~*~

The next evening, after the sun had set, Imrahil told Faramir and his brother to put on their warm cloaks.

“Something special to see. You’ll like it, I think.”

They walked down to the edge of the coast. From some distance, the lanterns on fishing boats out in the water could be seen, shivering specks against the darkness. But there was something else…

“The sea… it glows!” Boromir cried out as they approached. Faramir said nothing, but only stared at the waves. As they broke on the shore, they shone as if lit from within with a crackling green-blue flame, and the whole sea glinted with a tracery of strange light.

“We don’t often see this from land, but if you sail out far enough, it is common,” their uncle told them.

Boromir dashed off to inspect the water up close, carefully keeping short of the point where it lapped over the sand. The places where he stepped glowed dimly with the sea-light as he passed.

Briefly, Faramir recalled his dream of a dark wave towering above him, its edges glinting with light.

Then he put the thought aside and walked down toward the water, glowing bootprints trailing behind him.

Notes: the "sea-light" actually exists--it's the result of a red tide with bioluminescent phytoplankton, and it's really spectacular-looking at night. To my knowledge, it is more common away from the coasts, but I haven't personally seen it there. The background for the artwork is a photo (not taken by me) of a red tide at night from when that happened around here a few years ago, which I messed with a bit in Photoshop.

This is a delightful combination of two well-linked pieces with a very atmospheric pic. It gives a strong sense of Faramir as having a particular sensitivity to the world around him from his earliest years and it's possible to see the great fire-tipped wave poised to engulf him as a foreshadowing of the war to come. An intriguing combination of words and image. Thanks for posting.

*nods* He's good at that. ^_^ I'm glad it came across in these!

Gorgeous art! And excellent drabbles

I like how you tied in Faramir's recurring nightmare of the fall of Numenor into this.

In the picture I like how Faramir's position emphasizes his aloneness...

As readers, who know what Faramir's ultimate fate will be as the sole survivor of the House of Hurin from the Ring War, the premonition of his isolation hits hard.

Funny, that had never actually occurred to me before I saw your picture, and I've been reading LOTR for 35 years...

Thank you for the insightful comment!

Ooh, neat! I hadn't even really noticed that. My first sketch had Boromir in it also, but I decided that didn't look right so I took him out; fortuitous, I guess. ^_~

I'd never really written anything with Faramir's nightmare in it before, so I'm glad to hear that this worked. And it's really cool that this gave you a new thought--that's a wonderful thing about LotR, always more aspects of it to uncover. ^_^

Oh wow! I admit I've never heard of the phenomenon you're describing, but I'd like to see it myself! But given Faramir's dream of Numénor, the boy must have been rather frightened by the sight.

Somehow I thought you'd be intrigued by that. ^_^ It really is something--I hope you get a chance to see it!

And yeah, it was little bit eerie even to me, so how much more so to Faramir? Though I'd bet that a little bit later, he would have been plaguing Imrahil with questions as to why it happens... ^_~

What a lovely, evocative fic, and I love the illustration. The glowing bootprints were a striking detail. Thanks so much for sharing this (and lucky you to live near the sea).

Thanks! I'm glad to hear that these worked for you!

And yep, although when I saw that I only lived a couple miles from the coast and now I'm a bit further away, it's still a nice place to be. ^_^

Beautiful story and evocative art! Fire and water are so significant in the lives of Boromir and Faramir; and that interplay is very well reprised here. Excellent descriptions of the sea.

Very true! And so intriguing to figure out how they might have felt about those things at different points in their lives. ^_^ Glad to hear you liked these, and thanks for the comment!

Wow...so haunting. I don't really know what else to say...my brain isn't working very well today ;) But these are very atmospheric drabbles. And the picture is beautiful too.

Thanks! When I was trying to expand these, I kept losing that atmospheric quality by trying to say too much--guess I was right to leave 'em be. Either way, I'm so happy to hear you liked! ^__^

You've used the combination of art and fiction here to great effect. They're both stunning pieces made stronger by their linkage. Wow.

Shame on me for not leaving you a review sooner! I really enjoy the ficlets and art, and I love the thought of Dol Amroth having this phenomenon. I've heard of it, but have never seen it myself. I'd like to, though! The picture is very evocative. I like the way you've done little Faramir's hair.

Hey, the rocks at the side look kind of like a foot! :-D

Faramir's perception and isolation is depicted so well in both the picture and your words. Plus I love fics that show other relatives stepping in to give the boys some much needed love and attention. This is wonderful.

*nods* I'm not sure if I've ever written anything with Imrahil in it before, but I'd bet the boys endeared themselves to him right quick, yup. ^_^
